Open tryouts for the AAU season will be held each year in March in accordance with AAU procedures.  The primary season for the Catoctin Cougars boys'/girls’ AAU basketball is March  through October.  Teams may choose to operate year-round and play in competitive travel leagues around Maryland in the fall and winter.  The Cougars will stop their season annually in October in preparation for local school/Mid-Maryland/Recreation basketball competition.

The AAU Girls' Basketball Program was established in 1972 as part of the AAU Junior Olympic program.  Prior to 1972 , the AAU Men's and Women's Committee conducted basketball championships, which included a single junior division.  The National Championships started in two age divisions (15u & 18u) with eight teams in each and have expanded to include (8u through 19/u) plus the Junior Olympic Games.

In 1998, the AAU National Invitational Championships (NIC) was introduced with a total of 117 teams in seven different Age Divisions.  These are now called Division II National Championships and in 2006, 304 teams participated.  This was in addition to the 723 teams that competed for eleven AAU Girls' Basketball National Championship crowns.

In 2007, the Girls AAU continued to expand the ways to advance to the National Championships through 333 total Tournaments in 64 sanctioned Super Regional events or 16 weekends.  This is in addition to the 3,3880 District Qualifying Tournaments in 56 different Districts.

 Cougar Core Values:

No individual in the Cougars organization, including coaches, are paid. All are volunteers, who make many personal sacrifices to help the local boys and girls learn, play and enjoy the game of basketball. The Cougars are just as concerned about the character of their coaching staff as they are about the person's ability to design effective offensive plays.  Coaches often become partial parents to the boys and girls. They are expected to set a good example and be a role model of behaviors.

Team parents are just as critically important to our success. Without them, there is no team. No teaching. No mentoring. No enrollment in leagues, clinics and tournaments. No opportunity for our athletes to grow through participation in team sports.

Coaches, and team parents are required to be members of the Cougars organization. All coaches and bench personnel must be registered as a coach with the AAU.
